Participating Organizations

Morro Bay in Bloom volunteers improve the quality of life of residents by creating and maintaining welcoming public spaces, by promoting health and environmental sustainability, by sharing our love of gardening with youth, by helping grow a robust urban forest, and by honoring the ancestors of Morro Bay’s first people. Morro Bay in Bloom volunteers makes service accessible and enjoyable during two-hour social gardening sessions. Since MBOSA's conservation of culturally and environmentally significant Eagle Peak in Morro Bay, the organization has continued to achieve locally, including a new partnership with the SLO Beaver Brigade in which MBOSA will supply resources and effort to bring beaver education to the Morro Bay and Los Osos areas. Beavers can address many of the major environmental problems that are impacting Morro Bay and can aid in eel grass recovery, aquifer replenishment and silt reduction. Additionally, MBOSA continues efforts to acquire and preserve the Toro Coast Preserve, a breath-taking place along the Central Coast of California about 40 miles south of Big Sur next to Morro Bay. Our aim is to create an undeveloped playground for passive outdoor recreation perfect for hikers, bikers, birdwatchers and nature-lovers of all kinds. This is a work in progress to convert 1,500 acres owned by Chevron into conserved open space. The area to be conserved has been divided into 3 large parcels. Phase 1 has been completed. Phase 2, the second 700 acre parcel acquisition, is well underway, and MBOSA is seeking donations.

The Morro Bay Youth Sailing Foundation provides access to sailing for the youth of San Luis Obispo County. Funds are raised for sailing equipment, boats, coaching, and sailing lesson scholarships. Area youth sailing groups such as the Morro Bay Junior Yacht Club and Cal Poly Sailing are supported. Cal Poly does not provide boats to the prize-winning team, so we support their endeavors.

Sailing provides a healthy, fun, and competitive experience for kids that can lead to a lifetime of enjoyment. If a family doesn’t sail, yet a child wants to learn, we help make that possible. Scholarships for “Learn to Sail” youth lessons at the Morro Bay Yacht Club this summer will soon be available here. Completion of a session enables the child to apply to join the Morro Bay Junior Yacht Club.

The Bay Theatre has been family owned and operated since 1975. The building was constructed in the early 1940s as a single screen motion picture theatre. The Jannopoulos family maintained the historical integrity and charm of the building while pursuing their efforts to maintain and improve the physical and technical aspects of this landmark.

The most recent improvement has been the installation of a state of the art digital projection and sound system. We are proud to be the beneficiaries of Ultra Stereo of San Luis Obispo's generosity, who donated to us a digital sound processor and an assisted listening system, which includes no onlu sound amplification but also closed captioning and visual narration capabilities.

Mary Lou and the Jannopoulos family, after nearly fifty years of service and hard work, transitioned the custodianship of this remarkable venue to the new owners, The Wilsons, in 2023. A family of film lovers and California natives with forty-year ties to the Central Coast, the Wilson family is grateful to be taking over such a well-loved and care-for local institution and will continue to work with the Jannopoulos' in their best effort to maintain the quality and value of the theatre experience exactly as Morro Bay residents and visitors have enjoyed it for decades.

By Theatre ownership is a proud member of the Theatre Historical Society of America.
